An unusual museum concept is being showcased in the Kunstquartier Hagen (Hagen Art Quarter). Not one, but two museums are presenting their exhibitions there. The interaction between the two museums and their contrasting programmes, offering a blend of objectivity and abstraction, accounts for the special appeal of this event.

The newly built Emil Schumacher Museum in Hagen (ESMH) covering 1,200 square metres, is one of the world's major showcases of expressive art and is the main centre for research into this post-war movement. Schumacher's paintings, works on paper, ceramics and porcelains will be on display in alternating exhibits. The museum boasts more than 500 originals from all of the artist’s creative periods, provided by the Schumacher foundation and the City of Hagen. Young contemporary artists whose work is similar to Schumacher's in content or form will also be presented in regular exhibitions.

The totally renovated and extended Osthaus Museum exhibits its collection in the former Folkwang building. The works on show range from Classical Modernism through to a comprehensive collection of international abstract colour art. From May to July 2010, the Osthaus Museum is holding an exhibition entitled "Istanbul. Collection Huma Kabakçı" in the historic art nouveau building to celebrate the Capital of Culture RUHR.2010, featuring Turkish art from the Partner Capital of Culture Istanbul 2010.
