The Ruhr Built Environment Map
Compiling the plethora of exceptional "structural culture" projects in the Ruhr Metropolis in one publication is no easy undertaking. However, with their "Baukultur Plan Ruhr" (The Ruhr Built Environment Map), authors Detlev Bruckhoff, Thomas M. Krüger and Marnie Schaefer have succeeded in providing a comprehensive overview of the development of the built environment within the Ruhr Metropolis.
This work concentrates on contemporary architecture, landscape architecture, structural design and aspects relating to the region's industrial history. The work lists a total of 2,300 buildings, also containing maps and an index. Aside from detailing precise locations and addresses, these provide essential information relating to the city, building usage, year of construction and the architects involved.
An easy-to-understand colour code and clearly structured arrangement enable fast and easy location of all the buildings, the historical timeframes of which extend from the Middle Ages to the present day. Also presented in some detail is a selection of the most important buildings of each era, with illustrations and brief descriptions in German and English.
"Baukultur Plan Ruhr" is the fifth publication in the "Architectural Town Plans" series, which to date has dealt with the cities of Berlin, Munich, Cologne and Hamburg.
