The exhibition "Electricity in the Ruhr" shows how the production, distribution and use of electricity in the past 110 years have changed the economy and landscape as well as the everyday lives of people in the Ruhr.

The development of the Ruhr into one of Europe's largest energy centres has been driven by the massive mining of coal and the enormous production of steel and electricity during the past century. The intense usage of electricity in industry, business, transport and private homes was a key factor in the region's development. It influenced economic and everyday life as well as the landscape of the Ruhr.

That is the starting point for the exhibition "Electricity in the Ruhr" by electricity company RWE's company archive and Umspannwerk Recklinghausen - Museum Electricity and Life. Using historic photographs, the exhibition documents the history of electricity in the Ruhr since the end of the 19th century. Around 200 photos from the region's archives and museums show how the production, distribution and use of electricity in industry, business and private homes significantly shaped the Ruhr.

A catalogue covering different aspects of the regional history of electricity will be published in conjunction with the exhibition.
