Since 1990, Jewish communities in the Ruhr region and elsewhere have been growing. Described as a "miracle" by Paul Spiegel, the former President of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, this recent wave of immigration has resulted in the construction of new synagogues.

However, there have also been disputes between the older and younger members of the Jewish communities. After all, there is no "standard" Jewish culture. It is defined by various religious currents and by the differing European experiences and identities that the recent incomers have brought to Germany, exerting a lasting influence on regional Jewish cultural life and its culture of remembrance.

But who are these immigrants? Why have they come to Germany? Why Germany? What have they experienced in their native countries and in Germany - within the Jewish community, on the labour market, through their religion?

Based on 24 example life stories, this research and exhibition project puts faces to the Jewish immigrants. The exhibition will open at the Jewish Museum of Westphalia in Dorsten in February 2010 and will then travel around the Ruhr region and beyond.
It will be complemented by a programme of musical and literary events, and an accompanying publication is also planned.
