Science and knowledge as an integral part of RUHR.2010:
Universities, polytechnics, scientific, academic and research institutes are all an integral part of the Ruhr Metropolis. They are also connected to many of the cultural initiatives in the towns and cities. RUHR.2010 took this up at an early stage and, working with the Cultural and Scientific Institute (KWI) in Essen, set up a "Scientific Contact Centre" at the start of 2008. The duties of the office include exchanging information, creating dialogues, and developing joint projects for the European Capital of Culture.
The Scientific Contact Centre documents and coordinates academic and scientific work, research projects and initiatives related to RUHR.2010. It advises and supports academics and scientists in their work on RUHR.2010. It provides them with information on the European Capital of Culture and further research areas related to RUHR.2010 and other Capitals of Culture. It builds communication structures on RUHR.2010 between the academic and scientific institutes in the region, and networks all those who are working in this area. It organises the flow of information between academia and the Capital of Culture. Furthermore the office supports RUHR.2010 GmbH in its choice of academic projects, and prepares academic project initiatives related to the European Capital of Culture. The Scientific Contact Centre is the principal interface between academia and the European Capital of Culture. Its long-term aim is to network the region’s academic institutions with the European Capital of Culture and the general public over and beyond 2010.
The first results of the work of the Scientific Contact Centre are already beginning to make themselves visible:
- Up until September 2008, the Scientific Contact Centre was able to document more than 30 completed academic studies on RUHR.2010. A selection of these studies can be called up on RUHR.2010’s new website. They can also be requested from the Scientific Contact Centre for reading. - The Scientific Contact Centre has created an academic gateway to the Capital of Culture 2010 to make visible the academic activities and structures in the Ruhr metropolitan area connected to RUHR.2010: www.ruhr2010.de/wissenschaft2010
