Stanzwerk - Light Lounge
Stanzwerk Bochum, November 7 - 14, 2010
On request of the city of Bochum, the couple Andrea and Sven Schade developed an urban design concept for the passage of the Ruhr valley already in 2005. The project RUHRILLUMINATIONS was created, a master plan for urban development. Its main theme was "light" for the course of the entire Ruhr valley from Hagen to Duisburg. The idea for RUHRILLUMINATIONS emerged from the Stanzwerk environment and its commitment for culture. For more than 15 years, Andrea and Sven Schade have been turning the former steel plant into an exceptional venue of the Route of Industrial Heritage (Route der Industriekultur) with dedication and passion. The Stanzwerk is an actively "lived" prime example for a culturally efficient and thus creatively economic concept.
In this context, the aims of RUHRILLUMNATIONS were as follows:
- framing an accentuation of the Ruhr as the connecting element of the cities of the Ruhr
- exposing the Ruhr valley as an overall cultural concept of the Ruhr metropolis
- developing further the already effectively tried and tested illumination approaches
- finally being an illuminating merge for the polycentric Ruhr metropolis
It was one central idea to mirror and connect the course of the Ruhr and the Ruhr valley with illuminations at powerful places and to dare also experimental projects. Different views on the topic light art, e.g. by graffiti artists, promised new impulses.
The ideas of RUHRILLUMINATIONS are being linked together with the project "Ruhrlights: Twilight Zone": internationally renowned artists will perform light art in the Ruhr valley and dare a look into the future in September 2010.
The "Light Lounge" taking place in the Stanzwerk Bochum from November 6 - 14, 2010 will reason the perspective for the light in the Ruhr valley by a panel discussion under the title "Light and Darkness". The temporary light art festival "Ruhrlights: Twilight Zone" and its sustainable effect offer the peg for this discussion between important protagonists of the Ruhr valley and experts for light art.
The "Light Lounge" is also venue for events during the entire week, like for example for "Sonic Fiction 2010" from the series "grubenklang.reloaded" (lit. pit sounds).
The Stanzwerk Bochum - a site of the Route of Industrial Heritage as of 2004 - is situated centrally in the Ruhr valley with direct view onto the Ruhr and the illuminated industrial monument Henrichshütte Hattingen (Henrichs steel works). The ensemble of the former steel plant will be staged in a scenographic way during the entire duration of "Light Lounge" and will invite its guests to stay for a while in an unusual atmosphere.
