1st International Conductors’ Academy Ruhr – Voice and Orchester New closing date: 22nd of July 2010
The European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010 in cooperation with the Bochumer Symphoniker and their General Music Director Steven Sloane are offering the first International Conductors' Academy Ruhr - Voice and Orchestra. Applications are invited from talented conductors worldwide for a scholarship in the Ruhr Metropolis to take part in a unique ten day conductor training programme which will take place between 13th and 22nd October 2010. In the last months a huge number of applications from allover the world arrived in Bochum and there is still an active demand. For that reason Steven Sloane decided to extend the closing date to 22nd of July 2010.
Voice and Orchestra
The majority of conducting courses on offer teach conducting of orchestras. The International Conductors' Academy Ruhr - Voice and Orchestra - however, offers a rare opportunity to gain practical experience and instruction in conducting orchestra with singers and chorus, taking opera, oratorio and orchestral song as its basis.
Scholarships
There are a total of eight full scholarships covering fees, board and lodging, and in individual cases assistance towards travel costs. Six active participants will be selected from postal applications with DVD. Unsuccessful applicants are invited to attend the course as observers at their own expense. There is however no fee for observers. Furthermore any applicant not selected at this stage is invited to attend an audition on the day before the start of the course, when two further active participants with scholarships will be selected thus making a total of eight active participants for the course.
Timetable
The eight active participants will conduct in twice daily rehearsals with the Bochumer Symphoniker, professional singers and choirs in a broad spectrum of vocal and operatic literature. It is also planned to include opera houses and their ensembles from the region. Conductors will receive feedback on their work and have the opportunity to analyse video footage with tutors.
Highlights and Final Concert
In cooperation with the Aalto-Theater Essen one of the highlights will be an active participation in the opera-production Carmen by Georges Bizet. Other highlights are the contributions by Sir Roger Norrington and Sylvain Cambreling, who will give masterclasses and will offer participants the opportunity to work with them as internationally experienced conductors. The course concludes with a public final concert, to be conducted by the three conducting fellows, who will be singled out in the first days of the course.
