Seven European Gardens
Dye gardens contain plants with dyestuffs. The use of traditional dye recipes largely fell into oblivion at the start of the industrial revolution. The dyestuffs were once worked on by hand to produce a range of colours, pigments, paints and other colouring materials. The award-winning "Seven European Gardens" (including prizes from UNESCO and Entente Florale) guarantee that this knowledge, although threatened by extinction, will be passed on to the following generations.
In the short space of 10 years a simple ecological idea has developed into an international network. Hence "Seven European Gardens" has been responsible for creating dye gardens all over Europe, indeed the world. The man-made gardens in the Ruhr Metropolis and at the Hemer National Garden Show will be used as a basis for mediating the ecological production of dyes for use in cosmetics, materials, paints and theatrical paints in art lessons, theatre and film productions. In 2010 the project will be bringing together people of all age groups from the whole of Europe who are fascinated by plants and the art of dyeing, to take part in actions, workshops and exhibitions. Here children and young people will be able to participate actively, contact nature and the earth directly with their own hands, produce paints, boil down coloured liquids, experiment and paint naturally.
