Theatre Festival for the Youth

"Poles are often …; The English are all …; East Germans have always …; The Irish are continually … West Germans are different from …". For nine years the Annette von Droste-Hülshoff grammar school in Gelsenkirchen has been trying to actively counter prejudice. The expressive potential of theatre is an ideal tool to help people cross language and cultural barriers, break open the walls in their heads and red lines in the atlas.

In 2000 this resulted in a theatrical exchange between theatre groups in Gelsenkirchen and Cottbus. At the InterTWINed theatre festival they will be joined by school theatre companies from the twin towns of Newcastle upon Tyne (GB), Avcılar (TR), Milan (I), Dublin (IRL), Olsztyn (PL) and Stabekk (N), who will present mostly in their own language a variety of different theatrical forms and genres. What binds them all are their mutual prejudices and, of course, the similarities and differences between people from all over Europe. These will be creatively worked on in workshops. In order to ensure that the theatre festival reaches the public at large beyond the stage, a hundred young people between the ages of 15 and 19 will be residing with host families in Gelsenkirchen. The results of this European Theatre Festival can be seen from 9th to the 12th March 2010 in the Consol Theater in Gelsenkirchen.
