The three Veils of Europe
Young people's dance - The Myth of Europe
For many years the dance departments of the grammar school in Essen suburb of Werden, the conservatory in Grenoble (F) and the ballet school in Bytom (PL) have been linked in partnership. On the occasion of the European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010 the renowned choreographer Jean-Claude Galotta from Grenoble has been studying a dance play for the last two years by the name of "The Three Veils of Europa" with a total of 36 school students in Essen, Bytom and Grenoble.
The inspiration for the play comes from the Greek myth in which Zeus in the form of a bull kidnapped the beautiful Europa and took her to the continent which now bears her name. Whilst Zeus was carrying Europa on his back over the seas, the beautiful maiden’s veil was used as a sail. Three sons brought Europa into the world: Minos, Rhadmantys and Sarpedon. They have given their names to each of the individual parts of the ballet in the three cities. The three dance groups will appear together in a composite fourth part. As well as studying the choreography for the show over the past two years, the young people have been meeting up to make friends in workshops and summer camps.
