The Young People's Theatre Meeting
Young people from several different countries will first be rehearsing a specific play at home in their own language and their own interpretation. After this the actors will meet up and the groups and the languages be remixed and transformed into a Babylonian miracle; it can truly be called a miracle because the young people appear to understand one another within this context.
The Duisburg Young People’s Arts and Community Centre "Kiebitz" has used such intercultural methods in a brilliant and successful manner in multi-language urban partnership theatre projects for young people. In 2007 there was a celebrated German and Turkish art production of a Brecht play "The guns of Mother Carrar" featuring young people from Duisburg and Gaziantep. This was followed in 2008 by a German-Lithuanian-Turkish- Dutch interpretation of Shakespeare’s "Midsummer Night’s Dream". In 2010 the theatrical meeting between young theatre makers will be taking place for the first time in two countries: Duisburg in Germany and Nijmegen in Holland. The towns of Gaziantep and Corinth also wish to take part. The young people will be setting out in groups to discover the Ruhr Metropolis, and to publicise themselves in the form of spontaneous shows and street theatre.
