Crisis or just a part of everyday life - "hanging around in Europe"

Glorious idleness, hanging around, joblessness, crisis or just a part of everyday life? For some people in Europe having time to spare is a luxury. For others it is the expression of the lack of work available. What do people do when they aren’t working? What does "doing nothing at all" mean to people in different European countries?
Shouldn’t we start to question the concept of "work" in its current meaning? Has the concept of "time" taken on another meaning in a period of economic crisis and market breakdowns? Time is not money but life - isn’t that what it’s all about? These questions are being pursued by the Dortmund group "artscenico" who are trying to encourage as many people as possible in the Ruhr Metropolis and its European twin towns to take part in a photo safari of people hanging around. The project is open to anyone irrespective of whether they are professional photographers or not. The photos that are sent in will be published on the internet, and a selection of them will be collected for an exhibition. Authors, dancers and actors, pictorial artists and filmmakers will be requested to use these photos as first drafts for their own work. The resulting texts, videos, performances and installations will be presented in the Ruhr Metropolis in 2010.
