Binational Translation Contest 2010
Discover, translate and publish contemporary literature from the neighbour country! Two novels form the basis of this contest between German and French junior translators. Based on a novel by Marie Desplechin, 12th grade students throughout Northrhine-Westfalia will, in teams of four to six persons respectively, prove their feeling for language, style and expression, while peers from Grenoble and Lille will translate a novel by Inge Meyer-Dietrichs into French.
The students are invited to approach the texts most independently and spontaneously. Teachers may only help with questions regarding the interpretation or the authors’ style. In the presence of the authors of the original novels, the winners will be presented and awarded on 7th May 2010 at the Franco-German cultural centre in Essen. In addition to a publication in a bilingual book by the Essen publishing house Arka, the best translators from NRW and France will be awarded a common stay of several days in the Ruhr Metropolis, before the NRW winners get the opportunity to go to Lille while those of the special prize will go to Grenoble.
