Europe ... a Poem
From the 4th of July to the end of August the Bürgerhaus Gallery in Castrop-Rauxel will be playing host to the champions league of European poetry. The exhibition will be presenting one hand-written, signed poem (max. 16 lines) by a leading contemporary poet from each of the 27 member states of the EU.
These will be framed and presented alongside English and German translations, photographs, recordings and video material on their life and works. The exhibition includes two Nobel prize winners, Wisława Szymborska (PL) and Seamus Heaney (IRL). The curator of this unique collection is the English writer, Roy Kift. "I thought there must be magnificent poets all over Europe but where are they? And above all who are they?" says Roy Kift. "And wouldn’t it be a good idea to publicise the results of my research in an exhibition in order to increase our knowledge and promote more interest in European poetry. I think this will be the first exhibition of its kind in the whole of Europe." The collection of works by top European contemporary poets is more than just an exhibition of the variety of poetry currently being written all over the continent. The fact that the poems will be presented as hand-written works will create a much more personal, even intimate, connection between the artists and the general public.
