Fantasy - Create your World

In 2010 children and young people from the twin towns of Essen and Tampere (FIN) will be setting off on a journey of discovery into the world of mythology, fairy tales and sagas. To put it in a nutshell: fantasy.

They can invent and reinvent anything they like from Little Red Riding Hood to Hercules, hobbits, Thor’s hammer or the legend of the Nibelungen. They can also write sequels or modern versions. In this way they will learn about their joint European cultural heritage and add new adventures to it. The main idea behind the project is to create a second town under the Ruhr area. To do this they will invent new characters and stories linked to fairy tales and myths. The two authors behind the project, Marjaleena Lembcke and Sari Peltoniemi will be working with other professional artists to help the kids from Germany and Finland to find a way into fantasy literature and build up their own fairytale town beneath the Ruhr Metropolis. The exchange of films, ideas, stories and images between the German and Finnish project partners will result in a contemporary fantasy world made to measure for young people. An interactive exhibition will invite internet users to find out more and embark on a safari full of adventures. A number of different associated events, including a writing competition for children, will round the programme off.
