The Oberhausen literature prize was first awarded in 1999. In 2010 under the directorship of Michael Dilly, it expanded to become the LIT.AWARD RUHR. In June 2009 it not only included authors from the Ruhr Metropolis but also, for the first time, from the regions of the twin towns Mersin (TR/Çukurova), Carbonia (I/Sulcis) and Middlesbrough (GB/Tees Valley).

In 2010 all the invited authors will be called on to write short stories on the theme of LIGHT YEARS, IS  IK YILLARI and ANNI LUCE. "The exciting question", according to the initiators, "will be to find out where there are similarities and where there are differences. Other people’s points of view can enrich our own. And literature is the best of all vehicles with which to do this". By the 10th of January 2010 authors who have not yet made a name for themselves can also submit texts in their mother tongue. Local juries will then decide on the three best stories in each region. These will then be translated professionally into English. A jury of four, consisting of representatives from the four regions, will then decide on three major prize winners from the shortlist of 12 short stories. Cash prizes amounting to a total of 14,000 € should prove an attractive bait. The prize-winning ceremony is scheduled to take place on the 10th September 2010 in the Oberhausen Gasometer.
