Mozart East-West
Nizhny Novgorod’s opera house enjoys an international reputation. It is all the more astonishing that audiences at this major Russian musical centre were able to hear the "St John Passion" by Johann Sebastian Bach performed by the "Essen-Kettwiger Bach-Ensemble" and selected musicians from the Essen Philharmonic Orchestra for the very first time in 2008.
During the Cultural Capital year 2010 the "Kettwiger Bach-Ensemble" will be joining forces with the Society for German Russian Cooperation to welcome a visit by the chamber choir of the Conservatory of Nizhny Novgorod to mark a further chapter in the history of local performances. The programme will feature Mozart’s major Messe c-Moll KV 427. The composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was a cosmopolitan musician and this work will be at the centre of a meeting linking the two cultures. The work was written for two choirs and is therefore an ideal prerequisite for an artistic encounter between the twin towns. In addition the audience will be able to hear Aleksandr Tichonovic Grecaninows Demestwennaja Liturgija op. 79. The concert will take place on the 5th December, the 219th anniversary of the death of Mozart.
