RuhrChansonnale
The Ruhr Metropolis cannot only boast of thousands of singers, writers and musicians amongst its riches. It also contains countless cabaret venues and a regular audience who demand quality shows. The "chanson" fits in well with the Ruhr Metropolis because it was always an expression of life in large cities. The songs were about urbanity, they were socially critical and highly individual.
Since the 19th century "chansons", songs and "couplets" have moved from nation to nation creating a transnational European atmosphere. "In every age people have needed songs to express their joys and their trials and tribulations. Songs are like bread. They have always expressed everyday realities and told us home truths about the time in which they were composed and sung", says Maegie Koreen, the person responsible for the project, who is herself a chansonnière. The "RuhrChansonnale" will be presenting the powerful richness of the European song tradition in concert format. A huge number of poet/singers from the Ruhr Metropolis and its twin towns will be taking the stage to entertain us. Last not least, the festival goes right back to the roots of the idea behind the European Capital of Culture. The person who first thought up the idea was the singer Melina Mercouri, who later became the Greek minister of culture.
