Steel-hard mountain bikes will be coming up against the challenge of coal and steel landscapes at the RUHRCross.2010. Competitors will be pedalling through man-made and natural landscapes around the town of Witten. As an additional bonus mountain bikers will have a unique and exclusive opportunity to visit cultural monuments in the saddle.
The Saturday stretch will lead to the Henrichshütte Ironworks in Hattingen, the waterworks Stiepel, the old town centre in Hattingen, the Gibraltar colliery and Burg Blankenstein (castle). The Sunday stretch will be passing the Nightingale colliery, moving through the Muttental to the Berger monument, Witten viaduct and "Haus Schiede". Along the way the riders will be greeted by bands and a large number of activities will be going on. The route will start and end at the Lohmann fine steel factory in Witten- Herbede. On this weekend the family business will be celebrating its 220th anniversary.
Would-be triathlon world champions will be given the opportunity to have a go at the 60 km route. Everyday mountain bikers are recommended to restrict themselves to the 35 km tour. And families, children and newcomers should content themselves with the short route, around 20 km.
After that things will be going higher and higher in the TAUERNCross.2010. On the 31st July and 1st August in Witten’s twin town of Mallnitz, simultaneously with the Kärnten National Park festival, there will also be different categories of mountain bike tours taking place through the Hohe Tauern National Park, including Alpine summits over 3,000 metres high.
