Europe - 4000 and a single year
4000 years ago a myth is supposed to have arisen concerning a princess who was abducted by Zeus and carried over the oceans in the form of a bull to the continent which now bears her name. In Bergkamen the myth of Europa will be imaginatively intertwined with the ancient history of the town. 2000 years ago, when the oldest Roman military camp north of the Alps was set up in Bergkamen, the town had its first links with the breath of history.
But there were also huge upheavals on a personal level. The project “Europa – 4000 and a single year” will present private and public testimonies to this history resulting from coordinated projects between highly divergent European artists, and bring them back to visible life once more. A discussion workshop between artists from Bergkamen and their twin towns will result in large-scale video projections by Katarina Veldhues and Gottfried Schumacher, landscape installations by Atıf Gülücü and a large number of drawings, paintings, sculptures and performances. A decentralised exhibition in various locations in Bergkamen will present the finished works and actions that have grown out of this joint creative enterprise.
