Gülhane - Roses for Marxloh

The Turkish word "Gül" means rose. "Gülhane" is the name of the Rose Park in Istanbul and "Gülhane Elise" a grass-roots initiative using the symbol of the rose to promote intercultural friendship in the Duisburg suburb of Marxloh. An 11 metre high Rose Palace will be constructed from bamboo and rose blossoms around the Elisenhof in Marxloh.
During the three-week construction period the Elisenhof will be transformed into a colourful and lively bazaar featuring comedy acts, theatre, dance, fairy tales, music and sport. Artists from Duisburg, its Russian twin town Perm, and the other European Capital of Culture Istanbul will be responsible for creating the programme. Religious festivities will also take place amongst the neighbours including the Muslim Ramadan, the Jewish Sukkoth and Pessac festivals, the Christian harvest thanksgiving festival and a Russian Orthodox service. The programme of artistic events will culminate in a "Rose Night of Spiritual Music" during which "The Peace Light of Religions" will radiate from the cupola of the Rose Palace.
