The Third Eye
Children and young people, architects, artists and scientists constructing a model of how towns in the future might look in the conurbations of the Ruhr Metropolis, Wakefield in Yorkshire and Randstad. On the basis of real urban landscapes, schools in the Ruhr Metropolis have already created a miniature version of "Cybercity Ruhrstadt", complete with moving video robots.
In an interactive exhibition visitors will be able to stroll through the metropolis on a huge screen and view it with the eyes of a future robot. Indeed they will even be able to chat with the help of robots or drink a cup of coffee in the world’s first tele-present café. "THE THIRD EYE" is not only amazing because of the large-scale models, but also because of the scale of the quality attributed to urban metropolises in the future. The primary consideration during the years of development of this cross-discipline, media-art project was not how metropolises will look in the future, but how the participants imagined they should. What demands will they have to fulfil? Or to put it another way, what are the deficits in today’s urban conurbations? In this respect the Cybercities Ruhrstadt project and the participating metropolises will be simultaneously providing a technical vision and making a political appeal.
