An utterly different form of monastic treasure
A market complete with mediaeval activities in the terraced garden
Kamp Monastery, Germany’s oldest Cistercian monastery, was for centuries an important cultural, artistic and spiritual centre on the Lower Rhine. The town and its citizens are well aware that Kamp-Lintfort and its centuries-old monastic tradition simultaneously possesses a multifaceted cultural legacy.
After the departure of the Carmelite order a society named "the Spiritual and Cultural Centre of Kamp Monastery" has been looking after the legacy of the members of the order since 2003. As early as 1990 a reconstruction of an 18th century engraving of the 21,700 square baroque terraced garden was already a huge attraction, drawing thousands of visitors a meter year. On 18 and 19 Sep tember the Kamp Monastery invites visi tors to a day of celebration during which the treasures of monastic life still produced by monastic orders from all over Europe can be enjoyed in this jewel of a garden. These treasures include wine, vinegar, liqueurs, candles, oils, cards, skincare products, icons, audio books and CDs. Plenty of rich sweet products are freshly made at the Kamp Monastery and will be offered on the green, baroque marketplace. These include pralines, mouthwatering home-made chocolates, honey and other products made by local beekeepers whose products also include herbs and herb liquors. Mediaeval activities will be taking place around the market, including jugglers and traditional handicraft products.
