As Time flies
"The racehorse of the man in the street" as a messenger of art. Carrier pigeons will be fl ying art from all over Europe to and from Castrop-Rauxel! More precisely they will each be carrying a computer memory card with 10 digital photos documenting the creation of works of art by 20 artists from the Ruhr Metropolis and over 10 works from their twin towns. These works interpret the eras before and after coal mining.
For around 150 years the mining industry dominated the region and has left permanent marks on the landscape. That said, we often overlook the fact that 150 years is no more than the blink of an eye in the history of the Earth, that people were already living in the area between the rivers Rhine, Ruhr and Emscher before mining activities began, and that the future had already begun without coal. The carrier pigeon, a symbol of peace and mutual understanding will be serving the project as a poetic messenger. In September 2010 a total of 30 works by artists of different genres on the past and the future of the Ruhr Area can be seen in the workshop of the ceramic artist Ursula Commandeur and the artistic jewellers "Galeriehaus Grosche" in Castrop-Rauxel. Provided the pigeons don’t get intercepted by falcons along the way, the arrival of the memory cards can be followed at www.im-flug-vergangen.de.
