Oberhausen and Carbonia-Iglesias in Sardinia have a similar history of coalmining. The province of Carbonia-Iglesias was once an important coalmining centre and many people from the region emigrated to work in the Ruhr. Indeed there is still a Sardinian community living in Oberhausen today.
Like the Ruhr Area, the region in Sardinia was heavily affected by the crisis in the mining industry and is also in a process of structural change. Using film and music, people from both regions will be offering visitors unusual insights into the working world below the ground. In Oberhausen there will be showings of Italian silent movies accompanied by top-class live music. Readings, photography exhibitions, concerts of traditional miners songs, high-class jazz concerts and avant-garde music from Italy, Germany and the USA will round off the exciting programme.
