Intuition, emotion, curiosity, self-responsibility, coordination, organisation, media competence are all things which parents and educationalists can often only demand. But here they have been promoted by a growing project for school students and young people since 2004.
Under the leadership of artists, children and young people from various schools in the Ruhr Metropolis and Europe as a whole have been discovering their neighbourhood afresh and learning to handle new media. Using their mobile telephones as recorders they have been exploring their towns for sounds and images. For example, everyday noises have been re-defined as rhythmic sound loops. Photographic "mobilographs" illustrate the sounds, therefore resulting in completely new perspectives on everyday events. Alongside learning how to use communication techniques in a confi dent manner, the kids are learning to perceive their environment in a more conscious, analytic and selective manner, as well as reflecting upon themselves and other people and giving expression to their visions. It is intended that the homepage www.artgaffa.de, on which the works of the young media artists will be presented, will continue to grow into an exchange forum for young people throughout the whole of Europe in the future. Furthermore "youth_international" 2010 is working on a travelling exhibition to be presented in schools and local authority venues. Audiences will be invited to involve themselves actively in live music shows.
